Welcome to 7th Grade Reading/Language Arts!

My name is Ms. Sassatelli and this is my 4th year teaching at Jefferson.  I'm excited about this school year because for the first time, we will be combining reading and language arts classes into blocks!  What that means is that each student will have the same teacher for both reading and language arts, allowing us to explore both subjects in greater depth. I look forward to working with your child this year!

What Materials Will I Need?

Keep in Classroom:
1 composition notebook
1-inch binder w/ binder dividers

Bring Everyday to Class:
1 spiral notebook
1 2-pocket folder
Pencil or Pen (blue or black)
Planner
Independent Novel

What Will I Study?

In our reading/language arts classes, students study both literature and writing.

They will read a variety of literature, including short stories and poems from their literature book as well as teacher-selected novels.

Using these resources, students will analyze literature in multiple ways:

- Determining author's purpose
- Summarizing/paraphrasing
- Previewing, predicting, and questioning
- Identifying plot and story elements
- Evaluating literature
- Analyzing story structure
...and more!

They explore their writing skills in the following areas:

-Narrative Writing
-Persuasive Writing
-Expository Writing
-Creative Writing & Poetry
-Six +1 Traits of Writing
-Smiley Face Tricks
-Grammar
-Spelling
-Vocabulary

Some of these areas are covered throughout the year, while others are organized into units.
