Yorkie’s Roar Club

York Center’s PBIS System

The staff of York Center School believes that every child has the right to learn in a safe, secure, and happy environment, and that no one has the right to   interfere with either learning or teaching. York Center expectations are summarized into four short statements that we expect everyone in the York Center school community to follow:
  • Be Respectful
  • Be Responsible
  • Be Peaceful
  • Be a Problem Solver

ALL adults and ALL students are expected to see behavior interactions that meet these expectations in all settings. To help students learn and understand our school rules and expectations, specific  behaviors and skills are taught so students know how to meet our expectations in all school settings.

Expected behaviors are organized and charted so the entire school community clearly understands our school rules and behavior system. Please take the time to review this matrix with your child. You will find our expectations simple and respectful of others.

York Center’s Expectations Matrix

One of the most important aspects of the PBIS system is that behavior expectations are directly taught to the students.  Thorough the use of Cool Tools and class meetings, students know exactly what the expected behaviors are and how everyone is expected to behave in any school situation. Each year, all staff and      students participate in a kick-off assembly during the first week of school to learn the expected behaviors.   Reinforcement activities are also provided to strengthen our expectations throughout the year.

When a student has difficulty following our behavior system, the parent is contacted and interventions are put into place. Given the severity of the problem, or the number of times the problem has occurred, an Office Discipline Referral may be completed and sent to the principal where consequences are given.

Although York Center’s PBIS System includes consequences for making poor choices, the school staff makes sincere and conscious efforts to catch students following our plan and reward them with student recognitions and school celebrations. York Center staff members believe in frequent recognition of students who are following school expectations and exhibiting appropriate behaviors during the school day. These students are rewarded with Yorkie’s Roar Slips and are eligible for bi-monthly raffle drawings.

School-wide celebrations are held to reward the school community for following our school expectations. These celebrations, which applaud the efforts of everyone building the positive culture of our school vary, but may include special assemblies, extra recess or game time, special school event days or other similar activities.

Additional Support - CICO System

The Check In - Check Out (CICO) process is a strategy to assist those student who are struggling with inappropriate behaviors. Its main goal is to identify students early and provide frequent feedback to prevent future problem behavior. It provides a daily system of support and monitoring of student behaviors and increases school-home communication.

If it is determined that your child could benefit from this support, a letter will be sent to you outlining the CICO process. A certified staff member will meet with your child every morning and at the end of the school day. During these brief meetings, the teacher will touch base with the student and talk about a daily goal directly connected to our York Center expectations. These meetings are meant to provide a positive and encouraging start and end to each day.

To keep you informed and involved in your child’s progress, information on your child’s day will be send home daily.

As always, if you have any questions or suggestions, please contact our PBIS Coach, Mrs. Maribell Nieves, or me.  Our entire school community looks forward to working with you to help your child have a very successful school year!
