Emergency Closing of Schools
The Superintendent is authorized to close schools due to hazardous weather or other emergencies that threaten the safety of students, staff members, or school property. School closings due to weather and other emergencies are posted on the main page of the District website. A call will also be made using our automated calling service, School Messenger.

When children feel physically and emotionally safe, they are better able to focus on learning. During the school year, District 45 teaches students how to prepare and be alert for unexpected situations. As part of this process, schools regularly practice school and bus evacuation, severe weather, and shelter in place drills.
District 45 has a comprehensive safety plan. For security reasons, we do not post the plan on our District website. Working with the Villa Park and Lombard Fire and Police Departments, safety and emergency procedures have been developed for a wide range of situations.
Hot Weather Plan
The District does not close schools due to hot weather but may call for Early Release days at some schools under certain circumstances. Early Release days would be called at schools that cannot provide air conditioned learning spaces for all children when the forecasted temperature is 95° or higher with a heat index of 103° or higher for four or more hours. An Early Release day schedule is not called on the first day of a heat wave but a decision would be made by noon on the day prior to early release/modified day schedules being implemented. Parents will be notified of the Early Release dismissal via our parent alert system.
The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff are a top priority. We want to make sure they are as comfortable as possible so that learning can continue. As a result, our schools have a number of guidelines in place for planning instruction during hot weather.
Instructional Program Modifications
Teachers may rearrange the daily schedule so that basic skills subjects are taught at the optimal time. Recess activities are limited to instructional activities that require a minimum of physical activity. Physical education activities at all grade levels are limited to less strenuous activities and/or are rescheduled to a more appropriate time.
Alternative Locations for Instruction
Cooler areas of school buildings and grounds are used when available. As an example, some teachers may have students gather in shaded lawn areas or move to rooms with better cross-ventilation. Students in non-air-conditioned portable facilities may be merged with other classes in air-conditioned area, such as LRC, computer labs and music rooms.
Environmental Changes in the Building
The staff does numerous things within the building to reduce the heat within the building. The blinds are closed in the classrooms, windows are opened, fans are placed strategically throughout the building, hallway lighting is reduced and classroom lights are turned off or dimmed.
Athletic activities and practices may be canceled due to hot weather, or rescheduled for a more appropriate time. Before- and after-school programs may also be modified or activities rearranged.
Keeping Students Cool and Hydrated
Students are encouraged to bring containers of water to school during hot weather. Water fountains are available in all schools and all staff are encouraging students to take extra water fountain breaks throughout the day. Nurses will have a cold compress available if needed for students to cool down.
Students are asked to dress in lightweight clothing that is in keeping with their school dress codes. If your child has a medical condition that may be compromised by exposure to high temperatures, you may keep your child at home or arrange for an early release.
