Welcome to Westmore School
Welcome to the new website for Westmore Elementary School. Westmore is home to over 70 enthusiastic staff committed to providing a positive, successful experience for the entire Westmore Community. Every staff member at our school is dedicated to our core values of being respectful, responsible, safe, and problem solvers, and we instill these values in our students on a daily basis. Our staff values academic, social, and emotional growth in each and every student at Westmore, and we believe that all children can grow, despite any challenges they may face.
Westmore has high expectations for all of our students, and in the 2015/2016 school year we have implemented a growth campaign called #growth. The core of this campaign focuses on a growth mindset. Carol Dweck, psychologist and author, says it best: “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point.”
Through our Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) program, we have not only reduced the number of office referrals by over 80% in the past three years, but we have developed children with character and problem solving skills. The social skills taught through Second Step lessons and “Cool Tool” lessons have provided practical strategies for students to navigate their way throughout the school day. Our primary function at Westmore is to maximize the instructional time for all students. The implementation of PBIS has reduced behavior and increased accountability of all students. We reward these behaviors through quarterly PBIS celebrations called “Fun Fridays,” in which we have 100% participation.
To keep up with the standards of 21st century learning, our staff is using best practice strategies that challenge and engage our students. These strategies include Google Classroom, Reading, Writing, and Math Workshop, Student Goal Setting, and Technology. The district is moving to a one-to-one model of technology, which means every student at Westmore School will be equipped with a Chromebook by the beginning of the 2018 - 2019 school year. We will continue to explore meaningful ways to engage students in the learning process that maximize their educational experience.
Finally, we are absolutely confident that you will find our staff and administration to be supportive and student-centered. We will continue to challenge each child at Westmore to be his/her very best, but will be supportive in this process. If you have any questions about Westmore School or any of the information stated above, please do not hesitate to contact us at 630-516-7500.
