STEM Night at Westmore

On March 5, the Westmore Elementary PTA held a STEM Night at the school for Wildcat students and their families.

Students had the opportunity to experience hands-on science experiments at tables set up in the gym and hallway.

Volunteer families and students from Jackson Middle School, Willowbrook High School, and the community supported the event, and over 70 families pre-registered.

STEM stands for Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. At STEM Night, families visited tables featuring activities focused on science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Experiments included Glow Sticks, Ferrofluid, Tornado in a Bottle, Jenga, Plasma Ball, Chibots, Co2 Bubbles, Elephant Toothpaste, Marshmallow Bridges, and more.

In one hallway, students could take turns propelling bean bags using slingshots, and another featured a thrilling hallway hovercraft ride.

Dianne Garcia, a Westmore parent and chairperson for STEM Night, talked about the purpose of the evening.

“We hope we spark excitement about science and learning in our students and their families,” said Garcia. “I love seeing the kids have hands-on experiences with science, meet with all the outside organizations, and discover that science is fun.”

Garcia said that although she acted as chair this year, the Kuban Family was the inspiration for this evening.

“I never attended those events but heard how spectacular they were. Also, my parents loved science and education, so to honor them and the Kuban Family, I wanted to help revive STEM Night.”
