April is Autism Awareness Month

April is National Autism Awareness month. At this time of year, District 45 STARS teachers plan many activities to raise awareness about Autism.
Among the school activities are:

  • Classroom packets for each grade-level with lessons designed to raise awareness about autism.
  • Bulletin boards in school hallways with information about autism.
  • Daily announcements with autism awareness messages.
  • A day of the week is picked when everyone wears blue, as bright blue is the official color for National Autism Awareness month.

At the end of the month, there will be a Light Up for Autism Awareness and Acceptance with colorful light bulbs lighting up the school. Students will then be tasked with a short writing activity on how they can show acceptance and awareness.
